General information about the Department of Radiation Physics

At the Department of Radiation Physics research and education is conducted within diverse areas of radiation physics. The courses held at the department are aimed at both those who are curious about the radiation and want to know more and to those who have been thinking of getting a degree in radiation physics. For those of you who want to work with radiation physics in health care there is a Masters program that gives you the opportunity to become a licensed medical physicist.

What is Radiation Physics?

In short ...

The subject of radiation physics concerns the different aspects of radiation physics: sources of radiation, radiation properties and effects on the environment, measurement and use of radiation in different lines of work. An important part of radiation physics is the medically oriented activities where an expertise in physics is needed to safely carry out e.g. radiation therapy or diagnostics using X-rays and radioactive substances. Another area of great importance is the environmental radiology, which deals with, among other things radiation in our environment and transport of radionuclides in biological systems.

Knowledge on the effect of ionizing radiation on living cells and organisms is important for assessing radiation risks at both high and low doses of radiation. Radiation safety physicists employ various methods to protect and inform both the public and personnel working with radiation. Lately radiation physicists have also received assignments in areas relating to non-ionizing radiation, such as ultraviolet and infrared radiation, microwaves as well as various applications and security issues relating to laser radiation. Ultrasound is also included in radiation physics work as well as nuclear magnetic resonance, in particular with its medical applications.

In the subject of radiation physics, courses are given aimed at the professional activities of radiation physicists, medical physicists, radiation safety physicists or scientists. Other courses more general in nature are given to students without prior knowledge of science subjects, desirous of information in the subject, for example, persons who come into contact with issues relating to radiation and radioactivity or more generally interested in physical phenomena or environmental issues.
