PhONSA

The focus of the research group lies within analysis and optimization of cancer diagnostics and radionuclide therapies but the group also develops image based methods for analysis in collaboration with the department of plastic surgery.

In recent years, our spotlight within radionuclide therapies at Sahlgrenska University hospital has been aimed at radioembolization of liver tumors and somatostatin receptor mediated therapies of neuroendocrine tumors.

Regarding radioembolization we have studied and created models to describe how injected microspheres are distributed throughout both normal and tumor tissue. These results will now be used to better understand and predict treatment response. We have also initiated a study alongside the endocrine surgeons where radioembolization is compared to bland embolization.

Our aim in neuroendocrine tumor treatment is development of a robust methodology for dosimetry and analysis and creation of predictive models of kidney and bone marrow response. To optimize our treatment of neuroendocrine tumors, a clinical study is currently under way together with the university hospital in Lund.

With Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland we have participated in a preclinical study, optimizing the radionuclide therapy of folate receptor positive tumors such as ovarian cancer. Currently a new study is being undertaken, investigating whether similar methods can be used to treat prostate cancer.

In order to effectively analyze and evaluate CT, SPECT, PET, MR and gamma camera images we have developed an advanced image platform called PhONSAi (The medical Physics, Oncology and Nuclear medicine imaging research platform at Sahlgrenska Academy). With PhONSAi we are developing new image based methods for diagnosis of malignancies and dose calculations. Also in PhONSAi lies our recently created Monte Carlo based reconstruction algorithm SARec (The Sahlgrenska Academy Reconstruction code), used to improve the image quality of SPECT images.
This research group houses medical physicists, oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, medical laboratory scientists and has well-established collaborations with surgery, pathology and radiology. Our research is supported by grants from ALF, the Swedish Cancer Society, Jubileumsklinikens Cancerfond and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority.
